oil finishes, wood and didjs

First let me do my spelling/writting disclaimer. I'm a shitty speller, dyslexic and all sorts ofher stuff. basicaly a post this size is not easy unless i just do it and don't think to much...but i should get the main points across.. thanks

I've been wanting to start this post for a while. Oil is by far my favorite wood finish. I'm partial to drying oils. Oils basically fall into three lists non-drying, semi drying and drying. In the case of didjs, where we all seem to agree that the strong moisture barrier is important, a drying oil is the one. The provide the greatest and most durable/long term barrier.
The most basic standard for determining an oil is it's iodine number...hum..i'm not a chemist and don't fully understand the realationship but science guys have found that the amount of idione that can be absorbed into an oil gives you an quanitavtive understanding of it's drying capabilities. iodine number below 115 non drying, 115-130 semi and 130 or higher drying. There are some basic genral lists out there of oils, and their iodine numbers to provide a genralization of that type of oil. Thing of it is, like any thing that grows..which is where most oil we are talking about, come from, vary in there genitic make up and environmentaly conditions. So, some times you may find oils crossing over the lines from one catagory to another. Drying is sort of a tricky term here...it's old and come from simply observeing a wet thing turning not wet. Really what happens is that the oil reacts with oxygen. The reaction forms polyimure bounds. So basically an oil with a high iodine number a that is exposed to air turns into plastic. The longer the polymerbonds the stronger the plastic. Oil like wood "dries" in two stages. First the oils form strands or straight molecules then the molecules bound side to side or sort of cross stich. (I'm not sure but i think this is the differnce between semi dry and drying.) The longer the strands and the tighter the bound the more durable, flexible and wet resitant the plastic. Some classic drying oils are poppy seed, walnut, hemp, lineseed, soy, and tung. Tung oil is the generic "dryest" of the drying oils. On average it has the longest strands, and the tight cross stiching. Some people say best dyring oil..but that is realitive and depends on yer project. It also drys realitively fast on it's own. And thats a good segway to dryers and toxicity... cause tung oil is toxic , allthough, organic and natuaral. Like in the production of a lot of plastics once the reatction has taken place the chemistry is differnt and it is no longer toxic. With oil finishes, the folks that manufacture them add dryers to them to speed the drying or oxidization or polyimerzations....these dryers are nortuiorsly toxic throughout history.... lead, cadmium and now cobalt. and other metalic salts or soaps..ahh i'm not chemist so i get it confused...
Lineseed oil is a weird one. i've seen it rated as nondrying, semi and drying...see some times with dryer you can push an oil into another catogory..as well as simply speed up it's polimerzation. So some say linseed is not a drying oil or at least it drys reallly slow like years and years. Back in the day, and still today, allthough, it is a dying art, people used to boill or blow an oil to make a semi dry dry or a "slow drying" dry faster. (hum that's a odd sentence if it even is a sentnce) The boiling is simply that same thing we do with water...although the best results are obtaine with pressure cookers. certian oils have there magic heats and the pressure cooking enables you to not burn the oil but still get the reaction speeded. Burning like with food can ruin it's essence. This procedure the reason for lot's of horenduos accidents back in the day, whole citys where lots to gaint oil boiler explotions. Often this happend when solvents where add to the mix. See the reaction get speed and the oil get thinker the thiker oils is not good for penitartion and application, so solvent are add. Also simply don't want to end up with a gaint gummy bear thingy inside the cooker. So, this is why today you go to the store and buy bioled linseed oil and it's full of and types of nasty shit. petroleum solvents and metalic dryies. And that oil was never actaluy boiled. Blowing oils is another form of speeding the reaction where the oil is force through a type of jet or nozzle this mixes it with the air on a moleculare level. There are some companies that stick to the old ways. Blown oil is often sold as art painting product. "Tried and trure" is one of the more well known in this country wood finishing product companies doing it old school style.
Walnut and linseed come next in line to tung oil in the wood treatment oil finish world. BOth of these have the best potential for those that want to do it them selves from stractch on acount of the number of walnut trees in this country and the lack of tung trees...allthough there are some plantation of tung in the south..it is indiginus to china.(china wood tree) And flax well shit that was americas number on cash crop next to hemp for an long long time. Which is a great drying oil but the risk ain't woth a good wood finish in my mind. I'm growing a test plot of flax, my self, this year. Honestly there are probably a whole lot of oils out there being over looked. These oils i've list are popular because of mass industry and world trade, farming on large scale, not nessicarily because they are the best.
Aside from drying and solvents many good finishs use resiens. laquer is a genirc term for a finish that use a resien suspended in the oil. Lac was a break through in the finish world and spread like wild fire amoung furniture and instrument makers. Lac is a resien that comes from bugs..there are lots of types of lac bug each with their own properties. Shellca is an acholo base finish where laqure uses oil. Most modern products or reffrence to these terms like "boiled lineseed" is a bastardization. Copol, dragons blood, balsm fir are other historical popular resiens use in finishes. Wax's are often added to added for extra moisture resistance.
Let's not forget wood. If we are worried about moisture. Some woods are naturaly more resistant then others, cedar and redwood are poplar sidings in history cause they are very weather resistant. Cedar shingles.."right" never herd of alder shingles, have yeh. Locust is a classic fecne post wood in old america. locust fence post out lasted most other. Osage orange is and other clasic rot resistant wood. Fence post were often charged or burnt adding to their resistance. Tropical woods are popluar these days for decks. The genral rule is the more color the wood have the more resistant to root it is. Also let it be said that the genral rule is that the more color the wood has the more toxic the dust is. I once sanded some wenge with out a resporator and got laid out for a three days with flu like syptoms.
All in all my theory is a good penitrating coat. This is a coat of solvent or "thinned" thined oil. I've dream at times of building a tube in which i could put a didj submerged in good oil under high pressure to force the oild deep into the wood."presure treating" Let the penitrating oil dry partialy or all the way...??? not sure wich would be best, then some thinned oil/resien coats. Followed up by a wax coat. An other idea is to penitrate the wood with a semi or non drying oil. Alot of furniture maker take months and motnth to finish with oils. slowly building up coats til the oil is obove the surface of the wood.
A note on non toxicity... I found a recipe fromthe 1700's once that call for garlic as a dryer. not sure if it's garlic oil powder or what but, ther are surely natural no toxic dryiers out there, it's just finding them. MAny wood workers that make bowls and spouns and such use food grade solvents, manufactured for making cakes and pastries and stuff like that...some wood working supplyers carry these solvents

That smy oil down load...

peace

didge maintenence

So... bout a week ago I noticed a crack forming in my didge. Eucalyptus didge from aussie. I live in Colorado and it's rediculously dry. Does anyone have any tips on maintaining this so it doesn't grow any larger, or just maintenence in general. I've heard of submerging it in water for a couple of minutes, but I don't think this feels right. Expand with water and contract with air, seems like it would produce a nice crack. It still sounds great and I would like to keep it that way. Much love... thank you for your tips

Ok.. slightly off-topic here, but I know some of us are also interested in hang drums, but can't afford the dang things! This morning I happened to run across a DIY "Hank" drum, made out of a propane tank. It is basically a metal tongue drum, but it is laid out, played, and sounds almost exactly like an actual hang drum, and can be made fairly easily :D

So I know that many people here are pagans, I just wanted to ask a question. I myself am a pagan to be precise a BTW but his question is for everyone though, do you consider your didge a sacred instrument? Kind of like a wand, athame, chalice, or pentacle and if so what element do you think it most represents? If it is to personal don't worry I won't be offended by no reponses.

Too scared to shit myself

I posted a question a couple months ago on suggestions on what to use to seal the Yucca didj's I've been experimenting with (think Agave, but even softer and more porous).

Unfortunately, (as good intentioned as he may be) people like JOL have scared me shitless about using any type of epoxy, but I'm too scared to sit on the toilet seat now, because it might have an epoxy coating. And speaking of him, he's responded to my quest talking about his technique, but as much as I've asked (several times), he still hasn't offered to sell any product or offer any actionable techniques that I can do to seal my Yucca in a non-toxic way, so I don't quite understand what he's offering. Am I missing something here in a post in a galaxy far, far, away? Or does he only sell the non-toxic product on didj's he's crafted? That's fine if so, just let me know, because I'm tired of waiting for nothing.

And it's not like I expect a consensus on what I could use, but with reading everything I have in the past months, I am no where closer to buying any product and finishing the several sad and lonely didj's I have in my storage unit. But, I have read a lot of good quality bickering and pissing contests on whose epoxy is bigger than the others.

At this point, I'll just close my eyes, scroll down one of these posts, and wherever my cursor lands, that's the product I'll try. I do thank everyone for their input and suggestions. It was worth a try. Seriously though, the majority of didjeridudes and gals refer to Chad and his product/technique, so I'll probably start with that as a first step, then try others for comparison. That's really what it comes down to, trial and error.

If anybody has any grand ideas, I'll be in my bedroom hiding under my blanket, wearing a respirator.

I've tried a couple of different things, the Safeco Polyuraseal, which was terrible and gives off horrible fumes almost two months later, and the Livos brand hardener and sealer, which were good but not great. The Livos wood hardener made a great stain, but their wood sealer never really formed a seal, so I can still feel the didj losing air out the pores while I play, and it also does reek rather strongly of linseed oil to this day. All I want is something that will do what it says it does, seal, and then stop off-gassing eventually. Help me out, fam!

So I have this plastic modern didge I play around with, I looked into it and the bore is covered in green slime. Its a combo of spit, beer, and food. I ran a hose through the mouth piece and the nasty green slime came out.
Anybody else had this experiance?

I've noticed in the last year there's slowly be an a slow introduction of seemingly aggressionistic/confentational nuance in here. This nuance has led, directly or indirectly, to two or three instances of straight up, fuck you, slam, dis , put downs... dosen't feel to me like we should be putting each other down in these community threads. also, feels we should be mindful of our intentions, and mindful of what energies, reactions and conitations our approach may take. Theres been sevral discutions i'd like to jump in on or start, but the vibe, and or, the fear of creating a chance for the icky to arise detours me, and probably others. When communication and group situations get frustrating in an emotional way I sometimes think of the Don Miguel Ruiz's Four Agrements...

BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD: Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY: Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS: Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST: Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstances, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

Yucca didj's

Hey folks, does anyone have experience making didj's from yucca? Any advice on other than my following questions? I tried the hot stick method of burning/hollowing out the didj from either end, but it only worked for about a foot, then it just got compacted. So I had to cut it open on the bandsaw, hollow it out, glue it back together, patch holes with bondo. That's as far as I got. I'm basically following Peter Spoeker's (sp?) tutorial on technique. I've patched the big holes/cracks with the bondo, but there are still some small pin-holes. Looks like the types bugs leave when burrow through wood. Or they could just be the nature of Yucca to do that. I now need to get epoxy resin to coat and solidify the inside, then finally seal the outside with polyurethane. I guess my questions are:
1- any advice on where to order epoxy resin, and what viscosity to get. it has to be runny, but not clumpy (too thick) or soupy (too thin). Peter's tutorial doesn't give any brand name recommendations
2- instead of bondo, any other suggestions for both the big holes and small pinholes, on what to seal them with?
3- Any specific techniques to hollow it out without cutting it (which I imagine can only be done on yuuca without much of a bend or twist.

Thanks,
-Keeth CrowHawk

Hello to all you awesome players and makers of didge.
I have read through many posts/replies and could not find an answer to my question.
Can someone explain the how the inside surface of a didge affects the overall sound? On a more technical side. I understand the backpressure concept just not the soundwave concept. Hard and smooth as opposed to a more natural or rougher surface.

It just seems to me that a smoother interior would produce a better/cleaner sound where a rougher surface would be muffled.
Thank you in advance!

Here is question to all the people who have been in the scene for a long time. It seems that you can get a pretty great didge for about 500 to 1200. But then you have a jump up to 2000 to 3000 for what some are calling super didges so here is my question is it worth it and what makes them super?

For those out there who came to the didj after taking music classes I was wondering how you do you’re composing. I know a lot of players mostly or always due the improve thing is this what you do or do you actually kind of hammer it out on paper as you go. And for those who have nor had any formal musical training due you think it is a hindrance or a benefit and how do you compose.

I just bought another one from Laoutback. A nice Euc in C. I thought I really need a good Euc even though my car inspection is coming up and I hear some squeeks on my brakes. "But I can make it all back busking" I think to myself, just.....one......more..........

We recently upgraded our TV to HDTV with DVR. Not knowing what I was recording I decided to see what "Fantastic Festivals of the World" was all about. To our surprise we got to watch the Garma and Darwin Festivals, and in so doing we saw Djalu and William Barton. There may have been others (most likely) who we know, and maybe we can spot them on a replay. I suspect that they rerun these so keep an eye out for them.....they are well done, colorful and fun cultural immersions. I'll cross post this just in case.

The '08 RPM challenge is coming up in February. Woohoo. For those of you who haven't heard of it, it's basically a challenge to write and record an album in the month of February. It's not a contest - there are no prizes. It's just a good opportunity to challenge yourself, to get the creative juices flowing, and also serves as a good kick in the pants for those of us who want to record something.. but just never do for whatever reason.

I followed the challenge last year, although I didn't participate. I'm excited to be participating this year. I hope to see some more didge heads there this year! You know you want to! :)

Oh yeah, a link might be good.

For the past several weeks, the TMG Bulletin Board has been updated weekly with information about the entertainment and workshops currently scheduled for July. Now that the new year is upon us, the full website has been officially launched… complete with registration information, travel and lodging details, and merchant requirements.

Please register early, as your financial contributions make this event possible. Be sure to book your campsite or hotel soon as they fill up for the summer rather quickly! If you have any questions or concerns, drop me a message here on TRIBE, or simply use the contact form on the website to get in touch with me by email.

THANK YOU for your support in this exciting endeavor, and I look forward to seeing you in July!

A website for the didj community???

Hello beautiful people! I am creating a website for my Foundation Portfolio website class. And with this website, we can create any website we want. And so I've been thinking, what is something that inspires me, something I'm interested in, so that I can make this website amazing? But I want to create a website for the didj community, maybe with info, news, upcoming events, maybe even a post like Tribe (not sure what that entails and if I'm capable of it, but if it's something you're interested in, I will learn how to do it!) Does anyone have any ideas? Anything you would LOVE to see online for the didj community? I would love as much input and ideas as possible to make this website truly useful.
Do you have any ideas?
Do you have any good resources for me?
Didg events?
Feel free to send me a message if you'd like, I can't wait to hear some of your ideas. I have 10 weeks to create this website. Although the whole project doesn't have to be within that 10 week span, and I can take it further than 10 weeks after the class is over. Thank you for your input! I look forward to it!

Peace and Love

Something to share with my didj friends...OT

So things have been in a bit of an upheaval around here. I know some of you are caring for elderly parents like we have been doing for nearly 15 years.. My Dad, Martin (97) chose Dec. 24, 2007 to make his departure. Wasn't entirely unexpected, but still kinda shocking since he took it upon himself to speed up the inevitable. Confronted with the outrageous expense of running an obit in our local paper I have opted instead to put both my parent's obits on our website at www.logrhythmmusic.com/page7 and another epilog to the Biggie Book/journal regarding the deer behavior surrounding Dad's passing.

Going thru parental possessions is an arduous task but is also very revealing. The single biggest lesson that we can share is to not wait for your elderly to leave without going thru their papers and possessions in detail. So many questions arise like who is that in the picture, and when & where did you get that whatchamacallit, and who gets it when you are through with it? Then too, there is a bit of guilt that tags along with not having done certain things and asked questions when you should have.

Some of you are already aware that we have more than 50 years worth of letters that my parents (mostly Mom) wrote to their parents and Mom's sister. They are very entertaining reading being weekly diaries of our lives, and one such letter about my brother's and my aspirations for the future goes something like this: Mom asks my brother, "David, what would you like to be some day?" He responds with the same answer that he has used for 2 years with " a farmer."
Keep in mind that my brother was 7 and I was 5 at the time.
Then she asks me "and what would you like to be Per?" to which I respond "a snowman." Upon hearing that my brother immediately went about trying to convince me that there was no future in being a snowman, and so we both ultimately settled on becoming soldiers. To this day I still haven't experienced being either a snowman or a soldier, and I think I like it that way;-)

Cheers,

Per

Due to a variety of factors, the full launch of the TMG website will not occur until the new fiscal year in early January of 2008.

Starting this Sunday Nov. 11th, the “TMG Bulletin Board” will be updated every Sunday throughout the months of November and December to provide information about one of the featured entertainers or workshop presenters scheduled for TMG.

I see the average price for a good player is around the $300 range. For concert quality your asking for around $500 to $700.
But when I go to some sites and see a stick going for more then $2000 (didjshop) I really wonder. Even Djalu's sticks don't even sell
for that much!

Hi everyone!
been practicing trying to CB for several weeks and no closer to getting it. It must be something I am doing thats the hold up. I can do the bubble and straw thing and even buzz my lips and CB but on a didg I get zip! It seems like I run out of air in my cheeks befor I can switch back to lung air. is there any way to fix this ?
I start with a full breath start the drone then fill my cheeks. I swich to cheek air as i do this i take a sniff through my nose to top off. but befor i can start pushing with my lungs i lose the drone for lack of air in my cheeks. but pick it back up with the air in my lungs. i can do this over and over and cant get any closer to holding the drone.
does tongue position have any part in this? i can do this with it lying flat in my mouth or curl it back towards the back.
thanks for any help! Harold

Greetings tribe members. The Colorado Didgeridoo and World Music Gathering, aka “The Gathering” is on the drawing board. However, in order to pull it off, it is necessary to raise some seed money. For those of you who are in the Denver/Boulder metro area, would you be willing to attend at least one music fund raising concert? If so, Please reply to my tribe named DIDGE (Denver InDigenous Gathering Exchange).

didge in a box

Well I just finished this didge in a box from an article in didge magazine no.6. the plans were made by Detliv Muller and his web address is www.deti-didge.de. the site is in german but you can see the drawings and measurments to make the didge. he also has improved some of the plans and I want to make those also. this one was fun and easy ! and sounds not to shabby. it has lots of back pressure. the vocals are a little harder to do but the toot is easy also. the only thing I changed was the mouth piece it just seemed just as easy to glue a block on and shape as to add a round piece. I think this is going to really help me with circular breathing because of the back pressure. this might be great for anyone else trying to learn circular breathing.

You can fine the pic's on my site. as I am still computer challanged about posting photo's here.

So in my efforts to learn circular breathing, i am finding that either i am not getting enough air when i breath in through my nose, OR, i a get enough for like a half note... and if i keep going at that pace, i start to get light headed.

I know i am doing something wrong.. but im hoping someone can lend some pointers from this point forward.

Might also be worth mentioning that i play off to the right side of my mouth. havent figured out how to hit the same backpressure playing straight on.

Complexity and Speed

As we head into the festival season here, I have an observation.

It seems to me like the trend among didge players is toward complexity and speed.

I hear a lot of young players today whose highest compliment seems to be "Have you heard how *fast* he can play?"
It reminds me a bit of being a student at Berklee College of Music, where the great hoard of guitarists seemed always to be in competition to see who could play the fastest.

Certainly, players like Ondrej Smeykal have brought new layers of intricacy to the popular style.
Si Mullumbi and other speed demons have always been proponents of a faster style.

And don't get me wrong. The two players that I mentioned are among my favorites. When I listen to a youtube clip of Larry Winiwini crank out the old style - casual, but blazingly fast - I love it.

But personally, I am more drawn toward a style that is "interesting", or funky. Something that is both rhythmic and musical. One of my all-time favorite tracks is Stephen Kent's "Energizer" - from the "Family Tree" CD. Kent's mad didge skills, combined with an incredible sense of musicianship make him one of my favorite players. I don't always love what he does with his band, but I always dig his creativity - and as a soloist, he's top shelf.

I honor those who have put in the time training to play hard and fast. I also honor the creativity that guys like Smeykal are bringing to the scene. Chops is chops, and ya can't knock that. But I want to put out the idea that simple can groove just as hard as complex, and that magik happens at many tempos.

Any thoughts?

Jay

Gig in the Bay Area

I just received this email from a Wicked Tinkers fan:

Hello Jay ~

I am hosting a celebration for my 50th birthday on Saturday Nov.3 with live music and I am trying to find a didjeridu player to be a part of the evening - as a special guest musician. I live in Mtn. View (between Sunnyvale and Palo Alto) and the party will be near by.

My family is Australian - I still have an elderly aunt and cousins living in Brisbane area. Didje music has always "spoken" to me (much like the bagpipes do... my Irish heritage coming thru) and I would like to have my friends experience and enjoy something that is meaningful to me.

I would appreciate any information you may be able to provide that would put me in touch with a didjerdu player who might be interested/willing to be involved in my birthday celebration. Thank you for your time and consideration.

~ Renee

So, here's the deal....
If you live in the area, and are interested, email me.

The conditions are:
You must be a more than reasonably proficient player.
You must be comfortable playing an entire solo set (45 mins or so - no chat, just background music)
You must also be comfortable joining in with a band for a tune or three - so knowledge of basic music stuff like keys will be very helpful.

There will be - as they say - "some pay" which means you're not gonna get rich, but it'll more than cover your gas.
I'm betting that food and drink will also be provided - but you'll have to work out the specifics with the host.

Interested? Let me know.

Peace
Jay

Making a Walnut didj?

So my parents have 5 walnuts trees at home. I'm sure they'd let me grab a branch to make a didje with. How would I cure the wood. Anybody know a maker who would make a good walnut didge for me at a discount if I supplied the wood? How would I go about curing the wood.

I'm sure the wood would be beautiful. The idea of an instrument made from my childhood home trees is romantic to me.

Crazy or cool?

My first Agave Didj

Hello didj friends.

I recently finshed my first agave didj which I made from start to finish.

I harvested the agave from the cliffs on the coast of Big Sur (don't worry, the plant was long dead and dropped its seeds).

I also painted the entirety of the didj and coated with envirotex.

Thanks to all who gave me advice and expert tips when I needed them.
Smeykal Seminar: 2007 JT Didgeridoo Festival

I received a private message today asking if I could post these notes... here they are!

I hand-wrote these notes during the 90+ minute discussion & seminar presented by Ondrej Smeykal during the 2007 JT Didgeridoo Festival. Text in quotations is basically a direct quote from Ondrej… as best as I could document it while he was speaking, anyways. Much of the philosophy and theory behind his didgeridoo practice strategies and musical exploration are simple to comprehend, yet difficult for some to put into perspective. As a classically trained musician, I completely understand that you can’t walk the walk unless you pay your dues and spend hour after endless hour woodshedding material until it becomes effortless. Only after committing yourself to the instrument will the instrument truly say what you want it to.

I wish you the best in your didgeridoo endeavors, and hope these notes help you in your artistic journey forward. – Cat

Ondrej Smeykal

This message is in response to the threads about Ondrej that are happening on several of the didge tribes.

By late Sunday afternoon of JT fest, most folks had gone home. I asked Ondrej if he would be up for some individual coaching, and happily, he agreed to it. He had me play for a while, and was able to pinpoint some issues that I was having with my playing, and gave me some good ideas about how to correct them. YAY!

He then went into his basic didge technique philosophy, which is this:

There are three parts to the didgeridoo sound:

Drone
Tongue
Vocals

Each of these elements should work in isolation. In other words, we should be able to do tongued sounds without affecting the drone. We should be able to do louder or softer drones with no affect on the vocals. The overblown ‘toots’ should not affect the tongue placement Etc.

Easy to say. Not so easy to do.
He told me that he does exercises that are much akin to a dancer practicing isolations – and he does them a *LOT*!

As Ondrej puts it “No one can helps you.”

By which I think he means that there are no shortcuts. If you want to play like him – sit down and practice three hours a day for sixteen years. That’s it.

I think he gets a little irked when folks come up to him and say “Show me how to do that!” - they want to know how the ‘tricks’ are done. His response tends to be “Let me hear your drone.” If a person can’t do a really consistent drone, or can’t do a tongued or vocal pattern without throwing off your drone sound, then there is no use in him trying to teach far more complex patterns – and truthfully, there aren’t very many of us who are much more advanced than that. I know I’m not. …yet. :-)

He did, graciously, show me a few of his patterns up close, and slowed them way down. From watching this, I can tell you that – amazingly – 90% of what he is doing is the same stuff that the rest of us do. He has just refined it to a level that is astonishing. Everything appears to be effortless for him. He does a lot of sounds that I would think of as ‘intentionally overblown’ – sort of like a person imitating a turntable scratching sound – that are very percussive – for a split second, the drone is absent. I’ve heard Tyler do this kind of thing as well. But basically, he is just playin the didge (which I realize is sort of like saying 'Monet was just putting paint on canvas')

The other 10% seems to have to do with where he puts breaths and how he vocalizes. For instance, he showed me three different ways of approaching at overtone ‘toot’. None of them were particularly complex, yet I’d only ever done *one* before.

Regardless of whether you like his music or not, Ondrej is truly an innovator. He has gone beyond raising the bar for didge players – he has created a totally new bar, and set a new standard for ‘good’.

I hope it doesn’t take me 16 years to catch up ;-)

Hi Everyone,
I'd like to make a carrying strap for my didge. I got three leather strands that I've braided into a strap. But I don't know how to attach it to my didge. If anyone out there has done something similar, can you please let me know how you did it. If you know of any websites that show how to make a braided strap from leather strands, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks,
Darren

Las Vegas Didge Fest?

So, would anyone be interested in a didgeridoo gathering near Las Vegas sometime around late April or early May of 2008?

It would be held in the magnificent Valley of Fire State Park, about 45 minutes north of Las Vegas. The weather that time of year tends to be pleasantly warm during the day and quite cool at night. Information about the park can be found here:

http://parks.nv.gov/vf.htm

For those who don’t enjoy a somewhat primitive camping experience (there are toilets and water, but no showers) there are plenty of reasonable hotels in Las Vegas – and it’s an easy drive. There are also no food vendors at the park, but I’m open to ideas on that.

Perhaps we could incorporate a “Do Las Vegas” evening for those who enjoy such things. Maybe get a group rate on a Cirque du Soleil show.

This is just in the “talking about talking about it” phase, so no promises – but I’d be interested in facilitating such an event close to my home if folks are interested and available to attend.

Thoughts?
Ideas?
slide didge / didjeribone choice

i'm trying to choose sliding didjeridoo.. i know that i'm completely wanting it, but i don't know what to choose and may be i'm too greed ((%
i think it's pretty unreasonable to pay $130 or even $230 for couple pieces of PVC pipe..

but anyway, here are the options:
1. didjeribone by charlie mcmahon. $130.. there are sound samples that i like. i was in five minutes of buying it today, but then i stumbled upon another..
also i pointed that there written "issue #2" on order page.. is it the second modification?
didjeribone.com

2. holographic blue "slide didge". $230 \-8
it has three segments and looks pretty kewl... and it's so hi-tek, wich i like.. also its contracts to the length of only ~70cm (~28") and expands at length ~160cm(~64")!
but phukin 230 bucks for pvc pipe!!? crazyness!
i've just bought handmade darbuka of superb quality, one of the best on market for $250..
and i found no sound samples, btw..
https://wic015u.server-secure.com/vs4374_secure/retail_order.htm

3. another didj from this site. "black magic" 2 piece slide didge. $130 and no info at all. but at that pitty photo that they have it looks like conical in shape (im not sure..), wich is (if so) is good. other are mostly cylindrical. except that they have tubbes of different diameter. 'holographic blue' looks better from this point of view, as it has 3 different diameters in itself, and didjeribone just two.. thought, i don't know exectly how much this influences..
https://wic015u.server-secure.com/vs4374_secure/retail_order.htm

4. so called "the slider" with kangaroo drawing. something like $60, i dont remember exactly..
length when closed is 50", extended 80"
too big for portable didj, i think..
the only reasonable price.. but i dont trust this thing!! ((%
http://stores.ebay.com/Didgeridoo-Depot_Slider-Didgeridoos_W0QQfsubZ1045862

so please help me to grasp with this all..
i want it very much from one side, but from the other -- common sense: some people doing this didges for order of magnitude cheaper.. althought, it's impossible to find needed pipes at my location, anyway. (%

A Busking Story to Share

This past weekend we were approached while busking on the Pearl Street Mall by an older gentleman and his wife along with another couple of similar age. I say older, because they were clearly older than we are;-)

Both couples bought both of our CD's after listening to us for a bit. We began conversations, as we often do, asking where they were from etc., and one of the men began telling how the sounds of the didgeridoo reminded him of a time in the 1950's when he was a correspondent for Time Magazine. Turns out he witnessed the Dalai Lama and his huge entourage escaping from Tibet into India where he and others just happened to be, right on the border, and in the very location where the crossing took place. He described the scene as somewhat mystical in that there was a mist partially obscuring the mountianside from which the Dalai Lama's escape was being closely chased by a large contingent of Chinese troops. Everyone was cheering & screaming for the the escapees and Tibetan horns could be heard periodically penterating the mist. Needless to say, we were mesmerized hearing the true story from an eye witness. His name......Connery.....(as in Bond).....Don Connery.
A big world made smaller that day.

Interest in an online didge impedance calculator?

I'd like to get an idea if there is any interest for an acoustic impedance calculator. You would enter the dimensions of the bore (the radius at each position down the didge, at however many positions you want to include), and it would give you a graph of the acoustic impedance for that bore.

I originally got the idea from this website http://www.didgeridoo-physics.com/E/index.htm, and I tried to contact him to get a copy of the software he uses.. but no luck. He does have some good descriptions of what impedance is and how it is useful on his website though. For example, it's quite easy to determine the drone and toot pitches from the impedance.

I ended up subscribing to an academic journal for acoustics so I could access all their articles online. After lots of reading and experimentation I finally figured out how to calculate the impedance of an arbitrary bore shape. I have some rough code that will perform the calculations, and I'm consering putting up a webpage where someone can enter the bore dimensions and get the impedance, but I wanted to see if there was any interest - I don't want to put the effort into it if there's not :)

Aloha, I have brought in a new agave' didj. that vibrates and rattles the lightbulbs in my house with the new didj. played anywhere inside. It contains about 500 grams of pipestone as an interior coating with pipestone and howlite relief carvings and cabs. on the exterior. It is a perfect "D". Another didj. I created named Bubbles could be felt through the volcanic hillside downhill 20' and 75' away. Any strange accounts of didj. vibrational oddities out there? Aloha, JOL

I'm sure many of you are familiar with fellow didj player Rob Weidenfeld from Las Vegas. He's not been very active with didj lately, but he stopped by Boulder recently and found us doing our thing on the Pearl St. Mall. The weather was kinda grey and the crowds kinda thin, but Rob, being the professional videographer actually captured some decent video & sound.....unlike others of us busking that have appeared on youtube.

I'm looking for great photos that capture the spirit of the gathering.

Hi everybody...I recently bought a teakwood didge that plays and sounds great... The only problem with it is the mouthpiece...Although it works well and makes a good seal (too good actually) it`gets very tacky after playing for awhile. It`s supposedly palm and batik waxes..It really sticks to my mouth and lips and also leaves pieces in my moustache .....I`d like to replace it and am looking for some suggestions... I was thinking of some "tool dip" latex or silicone...Any ideas are welcome............Thanx .....Kent

Hey Tribe,

Eileen & I are thinking about doing some sort of "busking" public performance & school presentations workshop wherein we share performing tips and stories from our years of experience. Perhaps others could be persuaded to share their stories & experiences as well?
We envision it being free with donations accepted and those being passed on to local animal related charities.....probably G&T's choice/s. It would be our pleasure to do this, but only if there is enough interest.
Please respond here, or to G&T or to my email. G&T may also put up a survey on the JT didjfest website so see if there is suffcicient interest from those visitors.

Cheers,
