It's been a very long time since I've been here. Hope this finds everyone safe and happy and healthy.

Some of you may know, a good friend and co-conspirator of mine VJ Tasara and I have been working
on a little project called Speaking From Spaces involving many moving
parts. We describe it something like this:

A merging of many worlds of sight and sound as the didgeridoo played
by Pamela Mortensen is married with the visual poetry of VJ Tasara.
What are the stories they tell? Take a journey through your
imagination and find out....

Translated:
Speaking from Spaces is a work of imagination, merging the worlds of
music, moving video graphics, dance and theatre. It takes the
audience on a journey through many realms depicted in song and visual
poetry as told by the character The Nonentity. These realms range
widely in feeling from devotion to the struggle between the forces of
fire and water to the gentle wisdom of the elders who pass their
knowledge to others.

For those of you who relate to visuals more, here are a three video
clips that give you a sample of what the performance is like:

Sort of like the bore of a grooved rifle. Most players agree that termite grooves of a eucalyptus didge give it character. So, I'm just wondering what effects some clockwise or counter clockwise "groove character" would give a didge. Would harmonics be effected? Same question also for if grooves were created at a 90 degree angle to the vertical didge. Maybe this would create too much resistance?

he said that he heard that circular breathing can have a negative effect on the heart..that it's actually not reccommended for saxaphonists..he's quite the skilled player, so i trust his word, but i'm wondering if anyone else has heard about this type of health risk, especially when related to the didg...

i figure that if indigenous people have been doing it for centuries with little problems, then it must be OK,
The most important part besides peole knowing when to gather, was of course the collection of great logs and kindling to bring fire spirit.
The fire was buulya (sp?) ....into the night were very special song and dance, and of course fireside yarns.. as more logs were added to this roaring fire, a very new sound vibrated, spirit call, the intense upward draught from the fire was shooting through the hollow log, didgeridoo was born.....yay..made sense to me.

Actually, I had a didge for a while. One time was in my mate Jonny's loungeroom, thinking I was clever, making tunes with my new didge..I realized after a while he would leave the room when I played. Upon asking him If he didn't like the sounds I was creating, i thought I was ok 'at it', he quietly let me know that "didgeridoo not for weena. Especially not white weena. Dangerous."
Even though I was ignorant to this fact, I still felt such shame, at doing such a thing in a respected elders' home. I now have been given reasons for this law.

This is a fun workshop for beginners who have never played didgeridoo before. We will cover the basics of getting the drone, circular breathing, vocals and simple rhythms and moreas well as have a laugh or two along the way.

Circular Breathing and Rhythms
1:30-3:30pm
We'll cover more about circular breathing and how to get it and include it in rhythms as well as covering a more meditative approach to this seemingly elusive technique. We will also explore rhythms and techniques and how to put them together to make a song. If you do not have a didgeridoo, no worries, I will have extras on hand.
I personally enjoy this aggressive, technical didgeridoo style. I'm not sure if Ondrej Smeykal was considered the first to really pioneer this genre, but the likes of other artists such as Dubravko Lapaine in Croatia and Jake Duncan in the USA seem to indicate this playing style is becoming more popular.

Thursday, June 25, 2009... like most summer days, I woke up mid-morning, had some coffee, surfed on the computer a bit, ran some errands, and then sat down to practice during the early afternoon. As a musician and didgeridoo enthusiast, I take my summer practice sessions pretty seriously... I make a concerted effort to improve my skills and increase my overall playing stamina 4-6 weeks before the festival season starts. Even though I do practice fairly regularly during the rest of the year, during the summer months the didgeridoo takes on a whole new persona for me.

I was warming up with one of my standard “toot” exercises, and decided to concentrate on some articulation (tonguing) technique. Without even thinking about it, I suddenly began playing the exact rhythm for Ondrej Smeykal's “Flamenco” from his Didgeridoo Solo I album. For three years, I have listened to and studied this piece of music, but all attempts to successfully reproduce the rhythm on my own have ended in failure. Suddenly... instantaneously... without explanation... on this day I was able to effortlessly perform the “Flamenco” pattern.

For lack of a better description of the event, it was a musical epiphany.

Happy about the wonderful milestone I had reached in my playing, I continued on with my day... I ate some lunch (because you can't practice on a full stomach), ran some more errands, and came back to prepare for my bicycle ride... another part of my “get in shape” routine to increase overall health, stamina, and well being for the summer months.

As I was about to walk out the door, I glanced at the TV, with the CNN talking heads barking out the latest news...

Michael Jackson, a talented musician, composer, and the self-proclaimed “King of Pop” icon within the music industry, was dead at 50. Supposedly, he had passed away a few hours earlier... sometime around when I was practicing.

Now, this strange coincidence got me thinking. From what little I know of physics, theory states that there is a finite amount of energy and matter in the universe.

What if there is Finite Knowledge?

What if the passing of one human being allows the knowledge and energy possessed within that individuals body to be redistributed to others still in this world that can utilize it?

We've been approached numerous times by folks who have heard that playing didjeridu wil cure snoring and/or sleep apnea. We even worked briefly with a sleep apnea therapist and her results were not encouraging. Personally, we doubt that many, if any, folks are cured of either condition by playing didj.
For myself and my wife, we snore just as good as ever, even after nearly 12 years of playing. How about you? Has playing had any effect on whether you snore or not? Do you know of any other players who claim to be cured of either condition? This is not intended to be a scientific survey.

Those 2 conditions aside, we are strong supporters of the numerous health benefits to be a result of playing didj.

It looks like we have a festival ground & firm date for a weekend Rocky Mountain didgeridoo festival. The inspiring Dream Weaver Sanctuary is several acres in the Crestone area, at the foot of the glorious Sangre de Christo Mountains in southern Colorado. This is a new location about 35 miles from Joy’s place.

It is a green site so we compost and recycle everything. There will be potlucks and the End of the Road Café will be serving up yummy coffee and maté treats, and with everyone’s help can be a communal kitchen. This will be a self-sufficient camping event, be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms. Lodging is available nearby in the town of Crestone. It’s hoped that each person can do an hour or two of volunteer work a day, and it looks like we’ll be able to offer work trade & sliding scale.

The date for the festival is August 21-23 … this is one week after California’s Jammin’ Tree festival and two weeks after both the Crestone Music Festival and In-didj-in-us in Oregon. Ondrej Smeykal sounded excited about playing in Crestone, and other international artists will likely perform. They will need to travel great distances, so support them with your generous donation.

The hope is to draw audience and performers from around the region, and showcase mountain-state talent. There’s enthusiastic didj communities in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, and a well-organized bunch in Colorado Springs as well. There are a number of players and makers here in the San Luis Valley as well. Everyone is invited to play, either in a performance slot, open mic, ceremony, or sound healing. The End of the Road Café will be a small, intimate venue for acoustic performances and open mic… so volunteer to be a barista! Everyone is also encouraged to set up a booth to show their wares, or offer instruments informally by leaning them up against a tree. Anyone may offer a workshop.

Volunteers can work on festival coordination, publicity, booking acts, being an act, setting up the physical site, website, fund raising, you name it. Remember… it is YOUR festival, be a leader!

There will be a one-day potluck fund raising & planning event at north of Denver in Dacono Saturday June 6, the same date & place as last year’s event. If you remember It’ll be a great place to jam and have a blast!

Super big thanks to all the people who have made it possible to get this far.

A new yahoo group is forming for volunteers & performers… please contribute your ideas and be a part of making it real.

sign up by emailing rockydidj-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

On Monday March 2nd 2009, a very special musical artist will be performing a public concert at 7pm at Mountain View High School in Kingsley, Pennsylvania. Admission will be $5 for adults, $3 for students.

Ondrej Smeykal, a didgeridoo player from the Czech Republic, will be kicking off his spring 2009 USA Tour at the school. In addition to a concert, Ondrej will be working with the students in the MVHS Music Department for two days.

The didgeridoo, which is indigenous to the Aborigine people of Australia, is an ancient wind instrument that has been adapted in a modern style by this fantastic musician.

Ondrej Smeykal has been playing the didgeridoo for almost 20 years, and performs at concerts and music festivals all over the world. His distinct style can best be described as a “one-man didgeridoo orchestra” that must be heard to be believed.
The soft fiber didges i own all have a much lower volume output with the trade-off of making vocals more pronounced. I know there are a couple players who have coated the insides with pipe stone or some other clay material. I'm thinking about using something called artplaster which is apparently dimensionally stable (won't shrink) and is denser and harder than plaster of paris hilton (who thought something could be more dense). cheap stuff to pick up, its like 7 bucks for 5 lbs of the stuff which i spose for the 7-8 foot yuccas i make would take maybe two boxes max to coat the inside.
I had always wanted to learn since I saw one played as a small child, then reminded when I saw one on the Simpsons (lol). At the time I had never even seen a didge in person, and 35 dollars was a right price...I took me a week to make an ok drone and almost 3 months to circular breath at all. I didn't know anyone who played so I had to rely on the internet and second hand info. A year or two later I lent/gave the bamboo didge to a friend, who has moved out of state. My next didge was a nice pvc didge that played very well, what a difference it made! Didge has changed my life and opened many, many great new doors, and cured my snoring! (ask my wife, haha).
Lets hear your story!

Sorry I don't know what the toot keys are. It's very conical inside, though, and I can get two trumpet tones. It has really good back pressure, making it perfect for both beginners and advanced players. It has an unusual, almost corkscrew like, shape. It's really quite beautiful and will be an excellent addition to any collection. I don't play it much, as I have another C# that I'm partial to, so my loss is your gain.

Pam has heard it, maybe even played it - I can't remember, so perhaps she can comment on the quality of this exceptional player. I had it with me at the last open mic session at Zippy's Java Lounge in Everett, WA.

I live in Marysville, WA. I am willing to ship it, but you will have to pay for actual shipping costs.

I'm asking $200, which is considerably less than I paid for it new last year. Feel free to contact me for pics, or to hear it over the phone.
Sorry this is short notice. The weekend snuck up on me. If you can make it to this, we'd love to see you there.

This coming Saturday, 8 Nov, come show your stuff at Zippy's
Java Lounge in Everett, Washington as we host the next didgeridoo

Bring your didge, flute, djembe, oud, tabla, doumbek, hand percussion, harp, banjo, theramin or any other musical instrument that doesn't normally get heard at an open mic. Heck, if you come, I may even sing the theme to Star Trek. One never knows. Anyhow, here's the who, what, when, why and how.

You can hear it at the beginning of the song, and it supplements the bass line all the way through.

It's available through Amazon, or you can also stream it from www.lala.com (in both cases type in keywords "tanto makeul"). It should be coming up on Napster and Itunes any day.

I helped out with the engineering on this song, and I can tell you that I'm really impressed. I took home a copy and my kids won't stop singing the derned thing. Tanto says he's going to do a video if he can get the financing. He also plans to put up a sound clip from the beginning so people can hear the didge better. That will be on his website, www.tantomakeul.com, which should be active in a couple of days. -Bill C.

so how can i rezise (downsize) an avi file. I've managed to cut a 15 min recording into smaller (shorter) parts, but now want to reduce the size of the files so that they will upload onto youtube. They vary in size between almost a gig to 300 megs. would like to reduce them to a third of that if possible. the resolution is really good on the original recording so it won't be a problem to simply bring that down drastically.
What program will do this??

The full story is posted here: http://www.hang-music.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=15489

And the beginning of its new journey:

Last night (9/22/08) we were preparing to do some studio work, when Tessalin (our keyboardist) came in and proclaimed "there's a huge box on your porch!" I knew right away what it was, and that feeling was confirmed when I gazed upon the words "Pantheon Steel Drum Company."

We put aside the planned on projects and began to create a song honoring the "lost hang journey." Perhaps being behind on the "Brain Massage III" album was because it was meant to be.......and what an amazing feeling to have this wonderful instrument back home from going missing on June 24, 2005.

We can't say enough about what a fantastic job Kyle of Pantheon Steel did in returning the instrument to as good or better sounding than it ever was. Not only that, Kyle is a true humanitarian, not charging a cent for his fine work. We are so grateful for all those who have been a part of the amazing journey that this instrument has been on. Also, humanitrians Ron Kravitz, Cameron, Sherri and especially Adam who was immediately willing to help facilitate the return......and others whom we have no knowledge of but were a part of the chain of events.....even Mickey Hart whose concert brought the right people together at the right time, and whom we had had the honor of meeting and playing with/for a few years earlier, rounding out the magical synchronicity of the hang journey.

The lost Penta E hang is home and it will be singing a special song very soon.

Cheers,

I've started drumming on doumbek or djembe while I play my didge. The hard part was figuring out how to hold up the didge. I've only seen one type of didge stand online, and it costs over 160 bucks:
http://www.jgmp.com/didj/stands.htm

It's basically a cymbal stand tripod with a clamp, and that seems like a lot to pay. I thought about somehow clamping my didge to the boom of a $35 microphone stand, but the clamp part seems tricky. I don't need a heavy-duty solution because my agave didges are really light (thanks, Tyler!).

So I came up with another solution. I have a non-skid mousepad with a wrist rest. I put that on the floor, with the wrist rest on the side away from me, and put the bell of the didge on the pad, letting the wrist rest keep it from sliding away. The mouse pad looks something like this:
http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard_details.asp?PRODUCT=535

Then I use a guitar stand to hold up the didge. The stand I have looks like this one:
http://www.zzounds.com/item--KAM2445BK

I just rotate the top part around so the U-shaped top cradle is facing the other way. I rest the didge in the cradle and voila! This could work if you were standing up, but I use it sitting down in a cheap folding chair, so I can drum at the same time.

Does anyone have other creative (and cheap!) solutions to this problem?

I've been playing the Didj for a while but not to much in the last year or so since my Agave Dream Pipe got smashed in a car door, Ouch! ... it was such a clean sounding Didj perfect pitch and easy to make all kinds of sounds with.
I loved it very much and haven't been able to find its equal since. So Im wondering if someone can point me into a direction or knows of one who makes Agave didjeridoo's Dreamy Pipes etc... Say from Arizona kind....
I do have a eucalyptus Didj and love it.
I also am looking to start making as well . So If too anyone needs a helper or an assistant in the makings of all types of Didjs but would like to focus on Agave Didj's. Im more than happy to donate time in exchange of learning...

I live in Santa Barbara Ca. and Would so appreciate any help or advice in this...

After quite a lot of experimentation, I've found a very effective way to improve the sonic quality of plastic didgeridoos! Sand. But a certain KIND of sand.

Directly from the beach. North Carolina beach sand is wonderful because of its coarseness.

An important step, that really MUST be done, is to BAKE the sand. This kills any bacteria and seems to temper and harden the sand crystals. a cookie sheet works best, with the sand being no deeper than a centimeter. The bake should be 350 degrees for at least 45 minutes. Hour would be better.

I then mix the sand, and it works well when its warm, with waterbased urethane. Pour it down the tube... Let dry and play!

Of course your results may vary as will your mileage.

Further, as this was an attempt at humorous sarcasm, if anyone DOES try this, please get in touch, I'd love to know if it actually works

A little about me.. ive been "playing" on and off since I was 14 (27 NOW) but just recently sort of started playing alot more and trying to find my style. nothing clears my mind more than playing my favorite didge. I have a collection of 13 pvc and 2 bamboo didges, My parents own a music store so i have always had access to these types for very little cost, recently Ive found I can finally tell the difference between wood and plastic in sound terms and have begun looking for the right eucalyptus didge.. ill know it when i find it :) Ive never played or even held a eucalyptus didge.. just heard tons of songs and seen tons of videos. I also like the sound of many agave and yucca didges and would like to collect a few stalks to try my hand at making one on my own... again, I have no experience with yucca or agave didges either. I have made several decent sounding pvc didges with the help of my trusty zinser thermal welder ( wich doubles as a gnarly heat gun in a pinch). I am going to JT this year and would like to meet some fellow didge players. Im 6'7" and 345lbs so i shouldnt be too hard to miss.

When you evaluate a didge, or ask to have one made, what are the characteristics that describe the sound of a didge? What are the terms and what do they mean in regards to a didge?

Meditative
Percussive
Vocal Clarity
Fast
Slow
Mellow
Sharp
Trumpet notes
Thin
Rich

I'd love to see a list like this with descriptions to describe a didge's sound. Look at all the (silly?) adjectives that wine lovers have to describe a wine. "Oaky with a good nose." If we could come up with a list that everyone understands it would become easier to describe the sound of a didge in a way that others could relate to. Anyone care to take a stab at this? Chad?

Unfortunately, (as good intentioned as he may be) people like JOL have scared me shitless about using any type of epoxy, but I'm too scared to sit on the toilet seat now, because it might have an epoxy coating. And speaking of him, he's responded to my quest talking about his technique, but as much as I've asked (several times), he still hasn't offered to sell any product or offer any actionable techniques that I can do to seal my Yucca in a non-toxic way, so I don't quite understand what he's offering. Am I missing something here in a post in a galaxy far, far, away? Or does he only sell the non-toxic product on didj's he's crafted? That's fine if so, just let me know, because I'm tired of waiting for nothing.

And it's not like I expect a consensus on what I could use, but with reading everything I have in the past months, I am no where closer to buying any product and finishing the several sad and lonely didj's I have in my storage unit. But, I have read a lot of good quality bickering and pissing contests on whose epoxy is bigger than the others.

At this point, I'll just close my eyes, scroll down one of these posts, and wherever my cursor lands, that's the product I'll try. I do thank everyone for their input and suggestions. It was worth a try. Seriously though, the majority of didjeridudes and gals refer to Chad and his product/technique, so I'll probably start with that as a first step, then try others for comparison. That's really what it comes down to, trial and error.

If anybody has any grand ideas, I'll be in my bedroom hiding under my blanket, wearing a respirator.
Thanks in advance.
Hey everyone.

i decided to make a new tribe today. maybe it will take off. maybe it won't.
i am just ready for some more input that is positive. it seems to be getting
rather scarce lately. this is not just some kind of wah wah feel good tribe.
it is a feel good tribe, but not in the form of lazy self satisfaction- inaction. no no
it is more like the kind of tribe for us to share accomplishments and insights
from around the globe and become EMPOWERED ourselves to either start
making a difference, or to know that there are many more of us out there.
it is also a place for networking with like minded people that are into other
kinds of cool stuff. like the kind of stuff that you hear about and say, "whoa...
that's cool"

share what you like. i would really like to see this work.

i check tribe a lot during lunch. it would be great to get some inspiration to marinate on while i finish out the day.

First let me do my spelling/writting disclaimer. I'm a shitty speller, dyslexic and all sorts ofher stuff. basicaly a post this size is not easy unless i just do it and don't think to much...but i should get the main points across.. thanks

I've been wanting to start this post for a while. Oil is by far my favorite wood finish. I'm partial to drying oils. Oils basically fall into three lists non-drying, semi drying and drying. In the case of didjs, where we all seem to agree that the strong moisture barrier is important, a drying oil is the one. The provide the greatest and most durable/long term barrier.
The most basic standard for determining an oil is it's iodine number...hum..i'm not a chemist and don't fully understand the realationship but science guys have found that the amount of idione that can be absorbed into an oil gives you an quanitavtive understanding of it's drying capabilities. iodine number below 115 non drying, 115-130 semi and 130 or higher drying. There are some basic genral lists out there of oils, and their iodine numbers to provide a genralization of that type of oil. Thing of it is, like any thing that grows..which is where most oil we are talking about, come from, vary in there genitic make up and environmentaly conditions. So, some times you may find oils crossing over the lines from one catagory to another. Drying is sort of a tricky term here...it's old and come from simply observeing a wet thing turning not wet. Really what happens is that the oil reacts with oxygen. The reaction forms polyimure bounds. So basically an oil with a high iodine number a that is exposed to air turns into plastic. The longer the polymerbonds the stronger the plastic. Oil like wood "dries" in two stages. First the oils form strands or straight molecules then the molecules bound side to side or sort of cross stich. (I'm not sure but i think this is the differnce between semi dry and drying.) The longer the strands and the tighter the bound the more durable, flexible and wet resitant the plastic. Some classic drying oils are poppy seed, walnut, hemp, lineseed, soy, and tung. Tung oil is the generic "dryest" of the drying oils. On average it has the longest strands, and the tight cross stiching. Some people say best dyring oil..but that is realitive and depends on yer project. It also drys realitively fast on it's own. And thats a good segway to dryers and toxicity... cause tung oil is toxic , allthough, organic and natuaral. Like in the production of a lot of plastics once the reatction has taken place the chemistry is differnt and it is no longer toxic. With oil finishes, the folks that manufacture them add dryers to them to speed the drying or oxidization or polyimerzations....these dryers are nortuiorsly toxic throughout history.... lead, cadmium and now cobalt. and other metalic salts or soaps..ahh i'm not chemist so i get it confused...
Lineseed oil is a weird one. i've seen it rated as nondrying, semi and drying...see some times with dryer you can push an oil into another catogory..as well as simply speed up it's polimerzation. So some say linseed is not a drying oil or at least it drys reallly slow like years and years. Back in the day, and still today, allthough, it is a dying art, people used to boill or blow an oil to make a semi dry dry or a "slow drying" dry faster. (hum that's a odd sentence if it even is a sentnce) The boiling is simply that same thing we do with water...although the best results are obtaine with pressure cookers. certian oils have there magic heats and the pressure cooking enables you to not burn the oil but still get the reaction speeded. Burning like with food can ruin it's essence. This procedure the reason for lot's of horenduos accidents back in the day, whole citys where lots to gaint oil boiler explotions. Often this happend when solvents where add to the mix. See the reaction get speed and the oil get thinker the thiker oils is not good for penitartion and application, so solvent are add. Also simply don't want to end up with a gaint gummy bear thingy inside the cooker. So, this is why today you go to the store and buy bioled linseed oil and it's full of and types of nasty shit. petroleum solvents and metalic dryies. And that oil was never actaluy boiled. Blowing oils is another form of speeding the reaction where the oil is force through a type of jet or nozzle this mixes it with the air on a moleculare level. There are some companies that stick to the old ways. Blown oil is often sold as art painting product. "Tried and trure" is one of the more well known in this country wood finishing product companies doing it old school style.
Walnut and linseed come next in line to tung oil in the wood treatment oil finish world. BOth of these have the best potential for those that want to do it them selves from stractch on acount of the number of walnut trees in this country and the lack of tung trees...allthough there are some plantation of tung in the south..it is indiginus to china.(china wood tree) And flax well shit that was americas number on cash crop next to hemp for an long long time. Which is a great drying oil but the risk ain't woth a good wood finish in my mind. I'm growing a test plot of flax, my self, this year. Honestly there are probably a whole lot of oils out there being over looked. These oils i've list are popular because of mass industry and world trade, farming on large scale, not nessicarily because they are the best.
Aside from drying and solvents many good finishs use resiens. laquer is a genirc term for a finish that use a resien suspended in the oil. Lac was a break through in the finish world and spread like wild fire amoung furniture and instrument makers. Lac is a resien that comes from bugs..there are lots of types of lac bug each with their own properties. Shellca is an acholo base finish where laqure uses oil. Most modern products or reffrence to these terms like "boiled lineseed" is a bastardization. Copol, dragons blood, balsm fir are other historical popular resiens use in finishes. Wax's are often added to added for extra moisture resistance.
Let's not forget wood. If we are worried about moisture. Some woods are naturaly more resistant then others, cedar and redwood are poplar sidings in history cause they are very weather resistant. Cedar shingles.."right" never herd of alder shingles, have yeh. Locust is a classic fecne post wood in old america. locust fence post out lasted most other. Osage orange is and other clasic rot resistant wood. Fence post were often charged or burnt adding to their resistance. Tropical woods are popluar these days for decks. The genral rule is the more color the wood have the more resistant to root it is. Also let it be said that the genral rule is that the more color the wood has the more toxic the dust is. I once sanded some wenge with out a resporator and got laid out for a three days with flu like syptoms.
All in all my theory is a good penitrating coat. This is a coat of solvent or "thinned" thined oil. I've dream at times of building a tube in which i could put a didj submerged in good oil under high pressure to force the oild deep into the wood."presure treating" Let the penitrating oil dry partialy or all the way...??? not sure wich would be best, then some thinned oil/resien coats. Followed up by a wax coat. An other idea is to penitrate the wood with a semi or non drying oil. Alot of furniture maker take months and motnth to finish with oils. slowly building up coats til the oil is obove the surface of the wood.
A note on non toxicity... I found a recipe fromthe 1700's once that call for garlic as a dryer. not sure if it's garlic oil powder or what but, ther are surely natural no toxic dryiers out there, it's just finding them. MAny wood workers that make bowls and spouns and such use food grade solvents, manufactured for making cakes and pastries and stuff like that...some wood working supplyers carry these solvents

That smy oil down load...
I've heard of submerging it in water for a couple of minutes, but I don't think this feels right. Expand with water and contract with air, seems like it would produce a nice crack.
